Significant events in art career:
1953  Graduated from Dunedin Teachers College- major in Art
1960-61      Studied at London City Literary Institute & Ealing School of Art
1963-66   Studied at University of Canterbury, for Diploma in Fine Arts. WA Sutton, T.Taylor, D.Lusk, R.Gopas, R. Clark, L. Benseman and D. Peebles were among his mentors in this period
1966 Queen Elizabeth 11 Arts Council Award
1966-87 

Taught art in Secondary Schools and exhibited regularly in Christchurch

1969

Exhibited in “The ’69 Group Show” with D. Lusk, P. Hanly, M Smither, R.Angus, L Benseman, C. McCahon and others

1971 

Awarded a Woolf Fisher Fellowship to study Art Education in Australia & Europe   

1977  Exhibited at the Elva Bett Gallery, Wellington
1987-89 Post Graduate Diploma in Landscape Architecture at Lincoln University
1989  Special award from the NZ Institute of Landscape Architects. In practice as a Landscape Architect
1966 Commissioned to visit Seattle, USA, and produce paintings for the “Seattle Comes to Christchurch” project. This culminated in a tele-video link with the University of Washington, and an exhibition at the Centre of Contemporary Art (CoCA), Christchurch
1997 Italian exhibition in Taormina, Sicily at the G. Mazzullo Foundation, Palazzo Duchi di S. Stefano
1998 Became full time professional artist
Regular exhibitions in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin
2001 Painting accepted for the permanent collection of the International Museum of Caricature and Humour in Art, Tolentino, Italy
2002 London exhibition at Artbank Gallery

Biography Angelo, Maurice Rolland John
Artist, Teacher, Landscape Architect, University Lecturer.

Born Dunedin 23 January 1933. IS A DIRECT DECENDENT OF DOMENICO ANGELO TREMAMONDO, FENCING MASTER TO THE BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY IN THE 18TH CENTURY. Two children - Michael-John Richard (b 1963), Anton Findlay (b 1968); married 1993 Elizabeth Anne Roxborough (qv).

Educated Gore High School; London City Literary Institute and Ealing School of Art 1960-61; Dunedin Teachers' College 1951-52 - DipTchg 1963; Ilam School of Fine Arts, Canterbury University - DipFA 1965; Lincoln University – Post Graduate Dip Landscape Architecture 1989. Awarded: NZ Institute of Landscape Architects Student Merit Award 1988; Woolf Fischer Fellowship 1972; QE II Arts Council Grant 1966.

Formerly primary and secondary school teacher NZ, Australia and London 1952-63; Head of Department of Art, Cashmere High School, Christchurch 1966-76; Tutor, Advanced Studies for Teachers Unit, Department of Education 1978-80; Art Teacher, Christchurch Girls' High School 1980-81; Head of Department of Art, Shirley Boys' High School 1981-86; Visiting Lecturer 1989-90, Lecturer 1990-92 in Design, Lincoln University.

President, Art Teachers' Assn, Canterbury 1983-84.

Military service in the 1st Otago and Southland Regiment 1954-63 as Staff Sergeant.Represented the 4th Battalion team in the Queen’s Medal Interservices Shooting competition. Represented Southland 1958, Middlesex 1960 at fencing. A Salle Angelo classic fencer. Active in NZ Alpine Club1953-60. Traverse from Mt Macpherson to Mt Talbot 1958.  

EXHIBITIONS OF PAINTINGS IN NEW ZEALAND, ITALY AND LONDON     Other work includes designing stage sets and lighting, cartoons, caricatures, portraits, landscape designs and community workshops.
